Suneel's Light - Meet the Boys - Ben D.
Ben is a lively boy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy who currently lives outside of Chicago, IL. He has lived in the Windy City for almost five years now with his parents, his 2 sisters and his dog. However, his ties to Buffalo are very strong as his mother grew up in West Seneca, where his grandparents still reside.
Ben is currently in first grade and is having a great year! His two best subjects are math and reading, but if you ask him, his favorite is recess. He attends aquatic therapy weekly and enjoys playing outside with his neighborhood friends. This summer he was able to keep up with his friends by using his new medical scooter and has even been seen pulling his older sister Hannah on her rollerblades around the street! He is a gadget guy and loves to utilize computers as often as he can. Ben also enjoys travel and had a wonderful time while visiting his extended family in Buffalo this summer. For two weeks he swam with his cousins every day possible and ended his trip with a visit to the Marina and the Hatch for ice cream - an annual tradition.
Ben was diagnosed with DMD at age of 4. He has been on steroids for over 2 years, which is the only major form of treatment currently available to treat Duchenne. While he is still mobile simple tasks such as climbing the stairs onto the school bus are becoming increasingly difficult. Without further research for improved treatments he will continue to decline. However, there are many treatments currently in development that could possibly change the outcome for patients with Duchenne.
